Review Brainwavz R3 Dual Dynamic Driver Earphones

Review Brainwavz R3 Dual Dynamic Driver Earphones

The Brainwavz R3 are uniquely designed earphones that have several distinguishing characteristics:
- High Grade Aluminum Housings
- Dual Transducers with one specifically handling bass
- Over-the-ear memory wire

Included in the box:
- 9 sets of ear tips (1-triple flange, 1-double flange, 6 sets of S-M-L silicone tips and 1 pair of foam tips.
- Hard case for storage
- 1/4" headphone adapter
- Airplane adapter
The earphones have an aluminum housing that contains 2 transducers; this is not usually the case. What Brainwavz has done, as I understand it, is that they put in a 2nd transducer to handle the bass while the other transducer produces the mids & highs. The result is an earphone with great bass and open and airy mids & highs. A great sound quality that is better than many headphones or earphones that I've used in the past. The shape of these are a bit ungainly though and Brainwavz chose to use an ove-the-ear "memory wire" rather than a more pliable yet shaped wire that other companies use in this style of earphone. The result of using the memory wire is mixed.

The memory wire retains the shape that it is put in. So as you fit these to your head and wrap the wire up and over your ear, you feel the stiffness of the wire. It rubs on your head and ear and it must be manipulated until you can acheive a good fit. I was never really able to get these to a point where I could say they were comfortable. I always felt the memory wire. And every time I took them off and put them back on later, I'd have to fidget with the wire again to get it right. The advantage of having an over-the-ear design is that it reduces noise transmitted to your ears from cable rub and also gives a more secure fit in the ear since there is less tugging on the earpieces.

The heaphones come with a large assortment of ear tips that ensure you should get a good fit. With a high-end earphone such as the R3, you want the best fit possible to maximize the sound quality. These should fit closely in your ear. If you get a good fit they provide an excellent amount of passive noise reduction (sound isolation). This means two things... ambient noise is going to be reduced significantly (great for on airplanes or noisy environments) and people sitting near you are less likely to be bothered by the music you may be listening to since the sound is not going to be escaping out of your ears.

The earphone cable is a rubbery feeling cable that is reasonably lengthy. The cable is roughly 38 inches to the Y and 16 more inches from the Y to the earphones.

The R3's are very efficient and can play music quite loudly. Use caution and reduce the volume of your device before placing these in your ears.

Love the sound these earphones produce. The memory wire will not please everyone though.

I was provided a sample for review.
